When an adult is not able to manage their property or personal affairs, it is sometimes necessary to appoint a guardian to assist them. There are many reasons that an adult may require a guardian . A disabled child that reaches the age of eighteen simply may not be able to make the decisions or take the actions necessary to adequately manage their property or take care of themselves. There are diseases, often associated with aging, that result in the deterioration of an individuals ability to manage their life and/or property. Sometimes a healthy individual experiences an injury or illness that results in their incapacity.
New York law provides for a number of guardianship options to address the needs of incapacitated individuals. I will help you identify the appropriate type of guardianship for your loved one. I will also guide you through the process of having a court appoint a guardian as well as any post-guardianship proceedings that are necessary.
